Defining a Man’s Bathroom Space

I recently came across a book entitled Guy Space, a Guide to Defining a Mans Personal Space. The title intrigued me because being a parent for so long I have totally forgotten what it’s like to have my own private bathroom space. This got me thinking, what is considered a manly bathroom as opposed to a more feminine bath environment. Is this a new emerging trend? Let’s say you are a single guy moving up in the world, you have a good paying job, a nice car and a brand new house, now you want to trip out your bathroom so you can enjoy your down time after putting in a hard days work at the office. How would you create a bathroom that defines your sex and jumps out and says this bathroom was made for a man? Read the rest of this entry »

Bathroom Renovating For Dollars!?

Flipping a house is not a new concept. For a long time people have been renovating homes and then selling them for a profit. I’m sure just about everyone has seen or heard of the A&E, The Big Fix, AETV, and HGTV television series called Flip This House. If you have watched the show then you would know that the two most important selling features of any home is the kitchen and the bathroom. And since this site is all about bathrooms we are going to skip the kitchen and examine just what it takes to make your bath appealing so that you can make a decent ROI if a bathroom reno project is up your alley and flipping your house is your intended purpose. Small Bathroom Renovations by Design

Based upon the average size of most standard bathrooms and half baths (sometimes called guest bath), for the everyday homeowner a small bathroom renovation is pretty much a given. In most homes space is usually at a premium and unfortunately not all bathrooms can be the roomy lavish spaces as depicted in the trendy home improvement magazines at the news stands. The most common question that we get about small bathrooms is how to maximize the space to get the most bang for your buck without knocking down the walls. So while the actual space in your tiny average sized bathroom never really changes, the real question that remains is how do you create the illusion of a more spacious bath within the limited confines of the space that you already have in your loo? 3 Ways to Fix a Shower Head Leak

Showerhead leaks can be the result of one or more combination of issues. The most common problem occurs when you have just installed a new showerhead but failed to use Teflon tape or pipe thread compound when threading your shower onto the gooseneck pipe that protrudes out of your bathroom wall. Here the leak occurs at the joint where the showerhead connects to the gooseneck pipe coming out of your wall. A leak may also occur when your showerhead gets clogged from calcium build up or you may need to replace your showerhead washers. All in all fixing a leaky showerhead is pretty basic. All that is normally required is a few fundamental plumbing tools and materials like Teflon tape, thread compound, an adjustable wrench, a screwdriver and maybe a new washer. Does Your Bathroom Look Distressed? Well Maybe it Should Be!

The weathered distressed look goes against the grain of modern bathroom remodeling trends. These days everyone is promoting the modern contemporary style of bathroom design with its clean lines and pristine finishes. But if you are not one to follow the heard like a blind lemming and have some design sensibilities of your own then maybe a distressed bathroom theme is not such a bad thing. Sometimes you just want to be different when remodelling your home spa retreat and having a new spotless look to your bathroom doesn’t fit into your design personality or homely vision. So the question remains, how do you create a bathroom that looks as if it has been enjoyed by your family for generations perhaps even centuries without putting holes in the floor and refraining from cleaning the cobwebs and performing proper regular maintenance? The answer is as easy as the stroke of a brush. Read the rest of this entry »

Bathroom Tile Grout Repair

Dear Eric, I just want to say thanks for the great information on your site. My husband and I bought a previously owned house and have been living here for about nine months now. The grout in our bathroom looked fine when we first moved in, now however we are noticing it is beginning to crack and break up near the tub at the back of the toilet and under our pedestal sink. We think it may be because water gets by our shower curtains and sprays on the floor and our toilet had overflowed about a month back flooding our tile floor. Any suggestions as what we can do besides tearing up the floor to fix this problem. Debora M, Austin Texas. Read the rest of this entry »

Trends in Bathroom Faucet Finishes

Dear Eric Spurt: I would like to upgrade my bathroom faucet with a newer trendy model. My bathroom has an ultra modern look and I kinda know which models that I’m leaning towards but I just can’t decide upon which finish I should choose. Are there any guides as to what finish works best with which faucet style? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated, there are so many to choose from. Can you at least steer me in the right direction. Anita Boulard Washington D.C. Read the rest of this entry »

Cleaning Dirty Ceramic Tile Grout From Your Bathroom Floor

Dear Eric Spurt: Our tile floor in our bathroom is a disaster to say the least. I must admit we probably don’t clean it as much as we should but who likes mopping anyway? It probably doesn’t help that we have two kids under the age of ten either who have a tendency of spilling things, if you know what I mean. The tile itself is relatively ok (just a little dull) but the grout stains is making our bathroom look old and dingy. What are some good products out there to combat this problem? Are there any permanent solutions to this dilemma? Please get back to me on this, the wife is driving me crazy with the complaining, all she seems to care about is what our friends will think….help! Perplexed Pete, Edmonton Ab. Read the rest of this entry »
