“Bob the Builder, Yes we Can!” Attitude.

I may be dating myself but being a parent, one of my favorite TV shows on PBS, was “Bob the Builder”. I remember spending many Saturday mornings with my son watching the show and thinking, man I wish I had this when I was a little kid. The show made its TV debut in the UK in 1998. Set in and around a construction yard in a small town, Bob and his loveable gang of machines took on projects around town to help the town’s people.

What I remember most about Bob was the slogan of the Saturday morning cartoon, “Bob the builder, yes we can!” attitude. Sometimes in our lives we are faced with a bathroom project that we have no previous skill set or it seems so daunting that we would just like to crawl into the nearest vanity cabinet and suck our thumb like a little baby but we know that no matter how long we procrastinate the task will still be there, waiting for us when we emerge from our temporary hide-a-way. When you feel frustrated just think of Bob and the Can-Do Crew and how they demonstrated the power of positive-thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and follow-through. Like most projects, if you break them down into segmented measurable goals, then they are easily manageable and don’t appear as incredulous as they first appeared to be. Also take to heart that though it can be costly, the bathroom is a room that you most likely won’t be remodeling for quite a few years except for a few touch-ups here and there. Not to mention, the added dollar value you have added to your home just by doing a few bathroom renovations.

You must decide what you are going to do yourself and what you will have to pay a contractor to get done. While many of us feel that we can do a lot, we must truly look at our skill set and evaluate whether in the long run it may be prudent to pay a professional and avoid costly mistakes. Planning is key, so get out pen and paper and figure out what you want in you bathroom in terms of design, fixtures, surface materials and cabinetry. Compare prices to get the best deal. Sometimes you have been too ambitious in your wants but that’s not a problem, just scale back the unnecessities, sticking to what is most important to create the feel of what you are trying to get across with your new designs. Live within your budget, don’t overspend but leave a little leeway for unexpected expenses or possible bargains. Either way it’s always nice to be prepared. Celebrate in that can do attitude, just remember Bob and his crew, they were always able to find a way or make a way to make it happen.
