Painting and Decorating Plain Tiles in Your Bathroom to Save on Your Remodeling Costs

If you have to completely retile your bathroom, you know it can be a rather expensive proposition. There are two ways you can save money on tile when redecorating your bathroom, you can buy inexpensive, plain tiles and then enhance them by painting on creative designs or you can decorate your already existing plain tiles. You don’t even have to paint every tile. Just by painting a border or stenciling an image on a select few tiles can do a lot to enhance and freshen the look of your bathroom décor.

If you are enhancing your existing tiles, the first thing you must do is assess the condition of your old tiles, are they cracked, broken and what about the grout? If tiles are in less than perfect condition, it is probably best to replace them (find out how to replace a broken tile by reading this related article). You can scrape out any loose grout using a scraper and then fill the gaps with all purpose filler to speed up the process. Make sure the surface is clean of any debris by scrupulously cleaning with TSP and rinsing with fresh water. After the tile has dried completely, then apply a commercial tile primer.

For the painting process, you can use commercial tile paints or you may purchase normal acrylic or oil-based pigments. When the paints have dried you will then have to apply a coat of ceramic varnish to seal in your masterpiece. You can transfer your image onto the tile surface using carbon paper and then hand-paint your tiles. You can use a stencil as a template to paint on your designs or if you have some artistic abilities and are feeling extremely adventurous then you can paint it all freehand. The general rule is to let one color dry before applying any others to avoid the colors from running into each other, unless that is the effect you are trying to create. Another thing to remember is that you don’t have to varnish the whole tile, just make sure there is an ample border around the image to make certain it is properly protected from the bathroom elements of steam, cleaning chemicals and water. Have fun and let your creativity run wild!
