Prestige Granite and Stone on Emperador Dark Granite Countertops

Trends in bathroom materials indicate that in the last couple of years, natural stone has become an increasingly popular tiling design choice for bathrooms. At one point in time these precious stones were mainly limited to high-end houses but today natural stone has become much more affordable for the everyday home owner. Prestige Granite & Stone Ltd., a Calgary based company, imports beautiful granite and marble slabs to create exceptionally striking countertops, vanities, tables, shower surroundings and fireplaces for both the bathroom, kitchen and livingroom spaces. I had a quick chat with them down at the Calgary Home and Interior Design Show about Emperador Dark a popular type of granite used for bathroom countertops to create a refined modern appearance.

According to Prestige Granite and Stone, granite is the most common igneous rock in the earth’s crust and is also one of the hardest. It was formed ages ago when magma (molten rock) cooled and is composed of crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica. It is interesting to note that granite gets its color based upon the proportion and varieties of the minerals in it. Granite is perfectly suited for countertops because of its durability, beauty and practicality. Another interesting distinction of granite is that no two slabs are the same, so that each countertop that is manufactured and installed is a unique work surface. Also when installing a granite countertop, you don’t have to use thinset mortar or grout. What you do is put the tile close together on clear silicone caulk. When all is said and done, then you just have to apply a couple layers of sealer across the entire surface just to make sure you fill in all the cracks.

It is important to note that while granite is an exceptional countertop surface material, being a natural stone, it is still porous so to resist staining, it does require frequent sealing (a least once a year). Another consideration when it comes to tiling is that granite can be speckled or molted so check your tiles for consistency before you purchase them. Also because granite tiles are not rated for strength they are usually thicker than their ceramic tile counterpart. While granite is more affordable these days, leave the cutting and measuring to the professionals, if you make a mistake you could be out a lot of money because once its cut, there’s no turning back.

One of the things that people don’t take into consideration is the edge of their countertops when purchasing them. This is an important design concern that can be used to augment the design theme of your décor and should involve some important forethought.
