How to Choose a Colour Scheme 4 Your Bath – Part 2

Feb
15

So you have decided you want to paint your bathroom in a fresh new colour and the best part is all its going to cost you is your time, a gallon of paint and a few painting tools. But first you have to come up with a colour scheme before you grab your brush or roller. I should mention here the importance of buying a top quality paint and quality brush. Behr, Sherwin-Williams and Porter are good paint brands. Because your bathroom is a high moisture area, always use a glossy or semi glossy paint for easy cleaning and moisture resistance. The first thing you need to do is create a sample board of various colour combinations that you like and feel comfortable with as stated in Part 1 of How to Choose a Colour Scheme 4 Your Bath. Paint little 1×1 swatches of the colours you’re considering for your bathroom on 6×1 inch flat pieces of wood. Then hold the swatches against different pieces of furniture in your lavatory and with different lighting conditions such as natural light and artificial light (you can even do this at different times of the day). What you are trying to do is get a feeling of how the colour works with your bathroom environment and also how the colour of the paint is affected by different lighting situations. How to Choose a Colour Scheme 4 Your Bath – Part 1

Feb
13

If you are new to painting your bathroom walls, you will soon come to see that nothing changes the mood of your entire bathroom like altering the colour of your walls. Painting your bathroom walls not only creates a powerful visual statement but is ultimately a reflection of your personality and design style. And the great thing about painting your washroom is because of its size, you could probably finish this weekend project in just a couple hours. A good place to start getting color ideas is by looking at the colors of your furniture, woodwork, curtains and other prominent knick knacks such as a painting you would like your bathroom to compliment. The bottom line though is to pick colours that you like and feel comfortable with. And remember to preserve a sense of consistency throughout your home, so try to maintain similar colours between the rooms in your house. If you are not quite ready to commit to a particular colour scheme but still want to paint your lavatory walls then choose a light or neutral color such as white, gray or sombre tones of brown, which you can accent by adding eye-catching accessories. These colours are also easy to paint over if you do decide on a color scheme at a later date. Read the rest of this entry »

Bathroom Renovation Ideas – Finding The Right Course of Action

Feb
11

If you are a first time renovator, coming up with usable bathroom renovation ideas can sometimes be daunting. But don’t fret; many others have traveled in your shoes before, rest assured you are not alone. So, let’s shed some light on how you can come up with some good bathroom renovation ideas, get it done right the first time and save yourself a few headaches. First lets examine the problem. The good thing is that in every renovation problem lies the solution. If you break down exactly what you need accomplished and then what you plan to do to get there, then with a game plan, your renovation project should proceed according to your outline. As obvious as this may seem, you’d be surprised at just how many homeowners out of unbridled frustration run down to their local home improvement store and start buying on a whim as they go and then regretting it later when they have to return the items or worse, having to live with their impromptu purchases. Before you even step out of your home you must decide just how far you are willing to go with your bath ideas. The first question you should be asking yourself is – what is my budget and then the next question is whether or not you plan on changing your bathroom layout. Read the rest of this entry »

Small Bathroom Renovation Pictures Like a Pro

Feb
9

I can imagine that some of you are asking yourself what’s the point of taking before and after pictures of your bathroom renovation project? Isn’t the whole point of remodelling your bath is to get rid of your old outdated or rundown looking bathroom and replace it with a new hip modern and upgraded lavatory? Aren’t you trying to forget? Well, I can answer that question in one word: "Memories!". How many times have you heard someone say, “ aah, that’s a Kodak moment…” or “that was perfect; I only wish I had a camera to capture it.” It should also go without saying that if you are going to spend all that time, effort and money on renovating or remodelling your bathroom, you might as well capture your progress on video (or digital prints) so you can see just how far you have come. And by taking pictures of your small bathroom remodel, you can also document mistakes to avoid and beneficial processes and techniques to repeat again. Read the rest of this entry »

Ceramic Tile – Is It a Good Choice?

Feb
4

Ceramic tiles are either of the porous or non-porous variety. When trying to decide which one to use for your bathroom tile installation, the best choice would ideally be non-porous ceramic tiles. If you have a small bathroom and your choice of tiles have designs on them, to keep your design elements in perspective, go for smaller sized tiles to better incorporate them into your overall design. It also makes good design sense to choose contrasting colours for the floor tiles and wall tiles to set them apart and create dimensional space in the room. To round off your bathroom décor, choose relevant bathroom accessories that compliment the colours of your bathroom tile walls. Read the rest of this entry »

This is beneficial so you won’t get totally lost when you try to communicate with them as to what you want. Water Solutions Home Expo 2010

Jan
25

Water and bathrooms go hand in hand, everyone understands this. The thing that most home owners don’t quite grasp is the difference between hard water and soft water and whether or not they should purchase a water softener system for their home. On my rounds down at Home Expo 2010 I happened to come across a display for Water Solutions and I was fortunate enough to have an expert explain the benefits of having a water filtration and purification system in your home. Hard water, as it was explained to me, contains large amounts of calcium and magnesium, two minerals that cause the soapy scum on glasses and lime residue on bathroom fixtures. It was further pointed out to me, that while this water is suitable for drinking and gardening, hard water can cause mineral build-up in water heaters, pipes and showerheads, reducing the waters natural flow (which could lead to costly repair or replacement). Also a fact little known to home owners is that hard water furthermore reduces soap and shampoo’s ability to lather properly (so you use more), and more over, laundry becomes harder and duller in appearance. If you are a first time bathroom renovator, you should create a bathroom renovation checklist to ensure a smooth transition from task to task and keep your bathroom renovation costs down. Fixtures such as faucets, pedestal sinks and medicine cabinets can be replaced quite easily when remodelling your small bathroom. However, if you are planning to put in a new bathtub, upgrade your shower, or re-tile your bathroom floor or walls then more renovation planning and bath design preparation will be needed. If you don’t plan on doing the work yourself, finding a reputable bath renovation contractor is very important.

Your bathroom renovations will be less expensive if you do the majority of the renovation work yourself, but be sensible. If you don’t need to reposition the plumbing pipes or the ventilation air ducts, then you can probably do the work yourself. But if most of the work incorporates plumbing then you may want to hire a professional plumber, so be prepared to add this expense to your bathroom remodeling budget.

Creating a theme for your bathroom will bring your bathroom design elements together. You can hire an interior decorator to help you find creative bath design ideas you may not have thought of by yourself or you can look at bathroom pictures in magazine or online for inspiration. Bathroom design has evolved from being just a place to wash and perform bodily functions to creating a more personalize bath space. A popular trend in bathrooms is to transform your master bath into a home spa that incorporates design functionality with therapeutic rejuvenation. Another trend in bathroom design is the incorporation of green eco-friendly building materials. Designing your bathroom can be done by anyone as long as you remember to apply the six principles of good bathroom design.

Upgrading your bathroom can be fun and exciting and if done properly updating your bathroom will be a good home investment for years to come. Come on in and lets get started with that bath renovation project you have been putting off for far tool long!
