Another thing to consider is whether or not you want a combination tub-shower unit. If so, you are going to have to control the spray of water. Whether you choose shower curtains or glass sliding doors will depend on whether or not you have your bathtub against the wall or a free standing model in the middle of your bathroom.

Shower curtains are easy to install, give you greater flexibility in décor choices and are easier to move out of the way incase you need the full length of the tub for bathing a young child or cleaning. The good part about shower curtains is if they get too dirty, they can be easily replaced with another. And you can quickly change the whole feel of your bathroom by changing out your shower curtain along with coordinated bathroom accessory sets that include bath mats and toilet seat covers.

Sliding doors on the other hand are more permanent, offer a greater sense of security and look more formal. The only downside to sliding shower doors is that they can be difficult to clean because they have a tendency of accumulating soap and calcium deposits over time. Also because you can only open one door at a time, they restrict you to cleaning one side of the tub enclosure at a time.

Don’t forget the area surrounding the bathtub plays an important role in your bathtub remodeling project. Are surfaces slip resistant and are towel racks and storage conveniently within reach. What about entertainment; is there a place for reading materials or a TV or stereo to keep you company on those long leisurely soaks? Is there a place for the remote?

While tile is a more traditional shower enclosure material, textiles such as marble and other waterproof natural stones can also be used for your wall coverings. Keep the entrance to the enclosure uncluttered and have enough room in front of the tub so that you can easily dry yourself. A stepping stool with adequate grip is sometimes a convenient addition for getting in and out of your combination tub-shower enclosure.

If you plan on purchasing a tub to fit more than one person then you should consider a side mounted or pull-out faucet in case the spout gets in the way of the two inhabitants reclining at opposite ends of the tub. Whether the faucets are mounted on the wall, rim, or pull-out, they should be easy to reach and not interfere with getting in or out of the tub.
