Bodo Sauna at the 2009 Calgary Home and Interior Design Show

Who hasn’t enjoyed the warm penetrating heat of a sauna to relax, loose weight or detoxify your body. When most people think of a sauna they envision a hot and humid wooden room in which steam is produced by pouring water over heated rocks; in essence a steam room. Bodo, a health and wellness company would like to change our perception of what a sauna should be like by coming out with a dry heat infrared sauna system. Down at the 2009 Calgary Home + Interior Design Show I had a chat with Nathan, a Bodo sales rep and he enlightened me on the benefits and increased popularity of infrared sauna technology.

We have all heard that saunas are a good lifestyle choice but few people seem to know the reason why? Well, taking a hot bath or relaxing in a sauna for about fifteen minutes causes your blood vessels to expand slightly. According to Bodo Saunas, when you do this over and over again (at 60° for about 15 minutes) it in-avertedly improves the way your blood flows, as well as how efficient your heart pumps blood to the rest of your body, and the way the lining of your arteries function so that using an infrared sauna can effectively treat the hardening of your arteries.

A study was done with individuals with lifestyle diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking. They began using a sauna for 15 minutes a day; what resulted was that their hardened, plaque-filled arteries began to perform much better due to the increased blood flow. This study suggested that regular use of an infrared sauna may actually help prevent the hardening of arteries which causes heart attacks, strokes, aneurysms, and poor circulation.

Another interesting use of infrared saunas is pain relief, especially in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and anklylosing spondylitis (AS) patients. With periodic use of the saunas it was found that pain and stiffness decreased significantly.
