Save on Your Water Bill – Get a New Toilet Dummy!

Strong words for strong advice! Toilets are a necessity in life that every single one of us have and need. No matter what we bring into our homes, a home is not a home without a toilet! Say good bye to the old cherry bush behind the house! When you decide to take on a bathroom remodeling project, it is very important to include installing a new toilet into your bathroom renovation budget.

Why is it such an important decision to include a toilet into your bathroom remodeling plans, you ask? Well, the most important reason is that it will save you a lot of money in the long run, you need to conserve water. Older toilets use a lot more water than the new, more efficient toilets of today. Think about it, it makes more sense to spend the money now on a new toilet installation, while you are doing your home improvement project, instead of slowly spending way over the price of a toilet on your water bill over the next few years!

You will need to know a little about toilets before you venture out to find the perfect throne for your new bathroom. Listed below are the three designs that are currently available.

Gravity Flush – This is what we have been using for years. This is the old standard toilet that has a flush valve that opens and water rushes down the bowl. There are newer models where manufacturers have improved their system by developing toilets with new tanks and bowl designs. This gives them more power to the flush, with less water. They also enlarged the flush-valve from 2 inches to 3 inches. These toilets are easy to maintain, but the tank can sweat and there is still not as much power as other toilets. These toilets usually run about $150.

Pressure Assist Toilet – This is the toilet that is commonly used in public restrooms. They have a powerful flush. Their pressure tank fills up and is held there under pressure. An extremely powerful flush will occur when the flush valve opens and the pressure and gravity combine. The tank does not sweat, but the flush is loud, which makes it difficult to diagnose what toilet repairs need to be done.

Vacuum Assist – This is the newest type of toilet. Its porcelain tank has an inner vacuum tank connected to the trap-way. The trap-way is the large tube that carries the water out of the tank. After flushing, water flows out of the tank to create suction in the vacuum tank and the trap-way. This helps suck the waste out of the bowl. Toilet repairs are easier since it uses the same fill and flush valves as gravity toilets. This toilet has a strong flush and does not sweat; however, it is not as effective as the pressure assist models.

So how much will this cost?

Money. Money. Money. It always seems to boil down to moola doesn’t it. Well, here is the long and short of it: For people who are planning a home improvement project, the question is – “How much is a toilet worth?” It is amazing how much one toilet can cost these days, long gone are the days of pitiful porcelain boring toilets. The new breed of higher end models can range from $2500 to $4500 for these units. These new works of techno art come with all the bells and whistles you can think of, like programmable heated seats, hydraulic lid closers, temperature controlled adjustable spray nozzles, timers, etc. etc. For those on a budget or who don’t necessarily want the Rolls Royce of toilets, there are more cost effective toilets that range from $100 to $850. Include the price of reinforcing your floor because some of these newer toilets are heavier due to all the gadgets. Remember in the long run, you will save money because the newer ones are more energy efficient. Have fun picking out a new toilet, and remember this is a purchase that will be around for a while – so choose your throne carefully! Hopefully you’ll see the logic behind this and if you don’t well then maybe the headline does apply to you…
